Day 4 - Belfast
My team and I went to work on our project with Komodo today. We quickly set up and began collaborating as a unit. We had a lot of great idea generation after narrowing the scope of our project and coalesced through trusted discourse. Our work product has moved forward with greater specificity and creativity. However, some portions of the interaction brought forth a key issue regarding my leadership style. I have a passionate and aggressive personality that, in some cases, does not comport with other more timid styles. It can be both a benefit and a detriment in business, but it is incumbent on me as a leader to channel that passion appropriately. Jan observed that my style might not be a good fit for a specific task and that I should delegate it to a team member that might experience greater receptivity to our ideas. Upon reflection, this was an unequivocally accurate assessment and I'm grateful for Jan's observation and advice. I thrive on passionate discourse and probing deeply into issues. The more complex, the more engaged I become. I'm an attorney and a relentless problem-solver and debater. But adaptability and utilization of resources are critical in leadership. I'm so used to carrying everything on my shoulders from prior experiences and briefly fell into old habits. It is something I continue to work on improving. My goal as a leader is to enable others and guide my team to results. To accomplish this, I need to temper my enthusiasm and channel that energy into better leadership by listening more and talking less. Easy to say but harder to do when caught up in the moment. Nonetheless, an important lesson learned today and a reminder why I'm here.
My team finished up some great work and then we all went out for pints afterward because that's mandatory on a sunny and beautiful day in Belfast.
- St. Anne's Cathedral
- Kelly's Cellar's
